Monterey County, CA – In the early hours of Friday, April 11, 2025, a head-on collision resulted in fatal injuries to 53-year-old Humberto Lopez Castrejon of Soledad, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:07 AM on Abbott Street near Firestone Business Park.
A Toyota traveling northbound on Abbott Street reportedly crossed into the southbound lane for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a 2016 Nissan Altima. The driver of the Nissan, identified by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office as Castrejon, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota sustained injuries, though the extent and nature of those injuries were not disclosed. No passengers were reported in either vehicle, and both drivers were initially found pinned inside their respective vehicles.
The California Department of Transportation assisted with shutting down both directions of Abbott Street near the crash site. The northbound U.S. 101 Abbott Street off-ramp was also temporarily closed as part of the traffic response.
Authorities stated there was no indication of intoxication involving the driver of the Toyota at the time of the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
