Merced County, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025, a rollover crash on Interstate 5 resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others, according to KSEE.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred just after 12:00 AM on southbound Interstate 5, south of Highway 33.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a 2024 Subaru Outback carrying five occupants veered toward the center divider for unknown reasons. CHP states that the driver appeared to make an unsafe turning movement, causing the vehicle to enter the divider area. When the driver attempted to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway, they lost control. The Subaru overturned multiple times before crashing into a nearby barbed wire fence.
Authorities confirmed that the left rear passenger was ejected and died at the scene. The driver of the Subaru sustained minor injuries, while the three remaining passengers were treated for injuries. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported the injured individuals to nearby hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.
The CHP has not released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin. It is not yet known whether drugs, alcohol, or speed played a role in the incident. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
