Fatal Pedestrian Crash on SR-1 near Soquel Dr in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA – In the early morning of Friday, April 4, 2025, a pedestrian was fatally struck in a traffic collision involving a vehicle on southbound State Route 1, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:58 AM near southbound SR-1 just south of Soquel Drive. Initial reports indicated the pedestrian was struck near the center divide, close to the fast lane.

Emergency responders, including the local fire department, arrived on scene shortly after the call. Authorities initiated a traffic break and diverted vehicles at Morrissey Boulevard to clear the area for emergency operations. The driver involved had pulled over to the right shoulder following the incident.

A SigAlert was issued while all lanes remained closed for several hours, with traffic being rerouted as officials investigated the scene and coordinated cleanup efforts. CALTRANS crews assisted with traffic control and lane reopening procedures, and all lanes were fully reopened by approximately 8:03 AM.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage.
