Sacramento, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, February 17, 2025, one person was left in critical condition after their vehicle flew over the side of I-5, according to KCRA.
The Sacramento Police Department reports that the crash occurred around 1 PM near the I-5 West El Camino Avenue off-ramp.
Officers responding to the scene found the vehicle overturned, with the driver trapped inside. Emergency crews worked quickly to extricate the driver, who was then transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity.
Dashcam footage captured by a passing motorist showed the vehicle veering off the overpass before crashing onto the northbound lanes of I-5. Witnesses reported seeing debris scatter across the freeway, forcing drivers to take evasive action to avoid further collisions.
In response to the accident, law enforcement closed West El Camino Avenue between Gateway Oaks Drive and Azevedo Drive for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage and gathered evidence. The road fully reopened around 3:15 PM, though traffic remained slow in the area due to residual congestion.
The Sacramento Police Department and California Highway Patrol continue to investigate the crash. Anyone with additional information or dashcam footage is encouraged to contact authorities.
Single-Vehicle Collisions & Comparative Negligence
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
