Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, a chain-reaction collision near Shafter resulted in the death of a driver and left two others hospitalized, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:08 PM on 7th Standard Road at Poplar Avenue.
Authorities said the driver of a white Chevrolet pickup was traveling eastbound on 7th Standard Road when it struck the rear of a Honda Civic that had stopped to make a left turn onto Poplar Avenue while waiting for westbound traffic to clear.
The force of the impact pushed the Honda Civic into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a second Honda Civic that was making a right turn onto Poplar Avenue.
The driver of the Honda Civic that was struck from behind sustained severe injuries and was transported to Kern Medical, where they were pronounced dead at 6:23 PM.
The drivers of the Chevrolet pickup and the second Honda Civic were also transported to Kern Medical with injuries.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have been factors in the crash.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Insurance Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim or personal injury claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
