Elk Grove, CA – On the evening of Friday, May 23, 2026, a pedestrian hit-and-run left a 47-year-old Elk Grove man with life-threatening injuries and led to the arrest of Demond Hunter, 35, according to ABC10.
The Elk Grove Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:45 PM on Elk Grove Florin Road north of Heritage Hill Drive.
Authorities said the man was walking north toward the east sidewalk at an apartment complex driveway in the 8500 block of Elk Grove Florin Road when a vehicle left the driveway and struck him as it entered northbound Elk Grove Florin Road.
Bystanders remained with the victim until emergency personnel arrived. Fire personnel transported him to a local hospital, where medical staff indicated he was not expected to survive his injuries.
The Elk Grove Police Department’s Real Time Information Center identified a white Honda minivan fleeing northbound on Elk Grove Florin Road following the crash. The driver ran a red light at Brown Road and nearly struck another pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Investigators used the department’s automated license plate reader system to identify a license plate connected to the vehicle. Officers located Hunter north of Elk Grove in Sacramento County with the white Honda van, which had hood damage consistent with a crash.
Hunter was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run, with additional charges possible depending on the victim’s condition. He was taken into custody within three hours of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
