Modesto, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, May 7, 2026, a workplace incident at an industrial warehouse resulted in the death of a worker who was trapped beneath a forklift, according to ABC10.
The Modesto Fire Department reports that the incident took place around 4:40 PM in the 600 block of Mariposa Road.
Authorities said fire units responded to reports of a worker who had fallen from a lift inside the warehouse. Upon arrival, crews found one individual pinned beneath an approximately 15-ton forklift.
The Modesto Fire Technical Rescue Team was requested to assist, with multiple truck and engine companies responding. Crews developed a plan to safely lift the forklift off the victim, a process that took approximately 45 minutes before the worker could be recovered. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident alongside the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, which has opened a formal inspection into the fatal workplace incident. Under state law, Cal/OSHA has up to six months to issue citations if any workplace safety violations are identified.
The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of reporting, and the circumstances leading up to the fall remain under investigation.
