Stockton , CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, May 16, 2026, a head-on collision resulted in the death of a 38-year-old Stockton man and left three others with moderate injuries, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:17 PM on State Route 4 west of John Turk Road.
Authorities said the driver of a gray Kia sedan was traveling eastbound when he crossed over lane delineators and entered the westbound lane for unknown reasons. The driver of a white Tesla traveling westbound veered to the left, but the Kia swerved back toward the right, resulting in a head-on collision. The force of the impact sent the Kia airborne before it landed in a drainage ditch south of the roadway.
The Kia driver was found unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. Stockton Fire Department crews extracted him and performed life-saving measures before transporting him to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:21 PM.
The Tesla driver and two juvenile passengers sustained moderate injuries but declined medical treatment at the scene.
Eastbound lanes of State Route 4 were blocked during the response while emergency personnel and investigators worked the scene. Two tow trucks were requested for the vehicles involved.
Investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
