Stockton, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, April 20, 2026, a vehicle-vs-bicycle hit-and-run left Yvette McDermott, 50, hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury and led to the arrest of a suspected DUI driver, according to ABC10.
The Stockton Police Department reports that the accident took place just after midnight near Hammer Lane and Etna Street.
Authorities said officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist and found McDermott in the roadway. She had been thrown from her bike after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
A San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office employee who witnessed the crash stopped to render aid before emergency personnel arrived. McDermott was transported to San Joaquin General Hospital with a traumatic brain injury and remained in a coma at the time of reporting, though her family said she was showing improved signs of response.
Officers later located the suspected driver and placed her under arrest. Court records identify the defendant as Ana Manoa, and the case is being treated as a driving under the influence matter.
A GoFundMe campaign for McDermott has been established to help cover her medical care and recovery expenses. The investigation remains ongoing.
Personal Injury Claims
When the actions of reckless drivers cause others to be injured, the cost of recovery should not fall on their victims. Filing a personal injury claim with the at-fault party’s insurance can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists
Drivers have a duty of care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
