Monterey County, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, April 7, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Scott Flint Norton, 68, of Salinas, according to KCRA.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:35 PM on Highway 68.
Authorities said Norton was driving a Tesla sedan westbound on Highway 68 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle struck a tree, overturned into a ditch, and began filling with water. Norton, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was removed from the car by emergency personnel.
CPR was administered at the scene before he was transported to Natividad Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office formally identified him following the crash.
A SigAlert was issued for a short period following the collision, and eastbound lanes were closed at Pasadera Drive while crews worked the scene before being subsequently reopened. Investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
