Fiery Tesla Crash Kills 1, Injures 1 on Banner Lava Cap Rd near Forest View Dr, Grass Valley in Nevada County

Nevada County, CA – On the evening of Monday, April 6, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of a 47-year-old Washington State man and left a female passenger in critical condition after a Tesla struck a tree and caught fire near Grass Valley, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:20 PM on Banner Lava Cap Road near Forest View Drive.

Authorities said the man was driving a 2022 Tesla Model S eastbound at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to depart the roadway and crash into a large tree. The impact sparked a fire that took firefighters an extended period to extinguish.

The driver became trapped inside the vehicle with his legs pinned beneath the dashboard and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tesla was found completely burned, with no front wheels remaining, approximately 30 feet off the roadway.

The female passenger was able to escape the vehicle and crawl away before losing consciousness. She was found approximately 20 feet from the crash site and airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for serious internal injuries.

Authorities said alcohol or drugs are suspected to have been contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a personal injury claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
