Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, April 9, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality and ignited a brush fire near French Gulch, according to KGET, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:15 PM at Highway 155 and French Gulch Creek.
Authorities said a sedan was traveling at an unsafe speed prior to the collision. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its roof before catching fire. Bystanders at the scene attempted to pull the occupant from the burning vehicle before emergency personnel arrived. One person was subsequently removed from the vehicle. A reporting party noted that the vehicle appeared at risk of exploding in the moments following the crash.
Flames spread from the vehicle to nearby brush, igniting a fire in the surrounding area. Firefighters responded to the scene, and the flames were observed to be coming under control. The extent of injuries sustained by the occupant had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a personal injury claim or wrongful death claim.
