Sutter County, CA – On the afternoon of Sunday, April 12, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the deaths of an elderly man and woman after their car reversed into a canal, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:59 PM in a canal on southbound Powerline Road past Striplin Road, along a dirt farm road north of Catlett Road.
Authorities said a reporting party contacted officers after noticing a vehicle submerged in the canal that had not been there the previous day. Investigators determined that the driver had been navigating a 90-degree turn north of Catlett Road when the vehicle likely reversed into the canal during an attempted three-point turn. The car became completely submerged, with only a small portion of the rear roofline visible above the waterline at the time of discovery.
Yuba City Fire Water Rescue responded and recovered the bodies of both victims from the submerged vehicle. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office was notified and responded, with deputies arriving to assist at the scene. The vehicle’s license plate was registered to an address in Nevada.
The identities of the deceased were being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
Passenger Liability
Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a wrongful death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
