Multi-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 101 near Cuesta Grade Injures 5 in SLO

San Luis Obispo, CA – On the evening of Saturday, March 28, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision near the base of the Cuesta Grade left five people injured, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:21 PM on northbound Highway 101 near Hawk Hill Lane.

Authorities said a small black car was struck by an unknown vehicle, and a third vehicle subsequently struck one of the two already involved in the initial collision. One subject was reported unresponsive in the roadway at the time of the initial report.

Multiple ambulances were requested and responded to the scene. Five patients were ultimately transported from the scene for treatment, according to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

Highway 101 was temporarily shut down in both directions to allow emergency crews to safely operate at the scene. All three vehicles involved were towed for evidence purposes. Motorists were advised to drive with caution and remain alert, particularly during nighttime travel.

No additional details regarding the identities or conditions of those transported had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.

Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a personal injury claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
