Stanislaus County, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, March 8, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the deaths of two adults and two young children and left two other children injured, according to the Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place shortly after 3:00 AM on the Oakdale-Waterford Highway north of Claribel Road, east of Riverbank.
Authorities said the driver of a 2014 Dodge SUV was traveling northbound on the Oakdale-Waterford Highway when, for undetermined reasons, the vehicle departed the roadway and struck a concrete pillar near an irrigation canal. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames immediately following the impact.
Emergency personnel arrived to find four occupants trapped inside the burning vehicle. All four were declared dead at the scene. The deceased included two adults and two children, ages 2 and 5. The identities of the four killed were withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.
Two other children inside the vehicle self-extricated and were able to walk away from the wreckage. A 12-year-old girl, who sustained major burn injuries, was airlifted by air ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for further treatment. A 7-year-old boy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. Both children were expected to survive.
The Oakdale-Waterford Highway was closed during the investigation, and motorists were detoured through the area. Investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The California Highway Patrol’s Modesto office is handling the investigation.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a Wrongful Death Claim.
Passenger Liability
Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Wrongful Death Claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
