Bakersfield, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a collision resulted in fatal injuries to an adult pedestrian on Oswell Street, according to KGET and CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision was reported around 5:45 PM on just north of Pioneer Drive. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
Investigators stated that the pedestrian was allegedly running across multiple lanes of traffic immediately prior to the collision. The pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene following medical assessment procedures.
Authorities indicated that the involved vehicle remained at the location following the collision. No suspect vehicle information was immediately released beyond preliminary identification noted in the traffic log.
CHP officers secured the roadway and implemented traffic control measures to ensure scene safety and preserve evidence. A coroner was requested and responded as part of standard fatal-collision procedures.
Animal control officers were also requested after a dog associated with the incident area was reported, and arrangements were made to address the situation safely. A tow truck was requested to remove the involved vehicle once investigative steps were completed.
The identity of the pedestrian has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The collision remains under investigation as CHP continues to document evidence and review contributing factors.
Partial Liability in Pedestrian Accidents
California Law does not consider pedestrians to have the right-of-way under all circumstances, such as when they attempt to cross outside of a crosswalk. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide pedestrians with a Duty of Care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is subject to partial liability in a pedestrian accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
