Fiery Crash with TRAX Bus Kills 3 near Hwy 99W, Gyle Rd in Corning

Corning, CA – Multiple people were killed following a fiery multi-vehicle collision late Wednesday morning, January 14, 2026, on Highway 99W near Gyle Road, according to KRCR, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place shortly after 10:00 AM and involved a smaller city bus, believed to be a Tehama Rural Area eXpress (TRAX) bus, and at least one other vehicle. CHP logs indicate that one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading into adjacent lanes of the roadway.

Authorities reported that a total of three fatalities occurred as a result of the collision. CHP documentation indicates that one fatality occurred in a Toyota and two fatalities occurred on the city bus. Officials did not immediately release the identities of the deceased.

Fire, medical, and air ambulance crews responded to the scene. Emergency personnel worked along the shoulder of the roadway to assist injured parties, while firefighters focused on extinguishing active vehicle fires and securing the scene to prevent further hazards.

Due to the severity of the crash and the fire damage, Highway 99W was shut down in both directions near Gyle Road. Tehama County Public Works reported that northbound Highway 99W was closed at Gyle Road, while closures were also in place near Sonoma Avenue. Cal Fire estimated the roadway would remain closed for several hours to allow for emergency operations and investigation.

The California Highway Patrol assumed control of the collision investigation, which includes documenting the scene, examining vehicle damage, and coordinating with fire officials. As part of standard procedure in fatal collisions, evidence collection and scene reconstruction were conducted before any roadway reopening.

No information was immediately released regarding the cause of the crash or the number and condition of additional injured individuals. Authorities stated that further details, including identification of those killed, would be released after notifications are made and the investigation progresses.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
