Foster City, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a two-vehicle collision involving a silver sedan and a white and blue cargo van resulted in an adult male driver losing his life and injuries to another adult, according to KRON and CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:47 PM on westbound State Route 92 on the San Mateo Bridge, east of the midspan. Investigators stated that the silver sedan and the cargo van collided in the westbound lanes, leading to a severe traffic disruption across the bridge.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the silver sedan sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene following emergency response and medical assessment procedures. The individual has not yet been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin.
CHP stated that the occupant of the cargo van was injured and transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. The driver of the cargo van remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators as required under standard post-collision procedures.
Emergency medical personnel and fire department crews were dispatched to the scene, and Caltrans was notified to assist with traffic management and roadway safety. Due to the severity of the crash and the need for investigation, all westbound lanes of the bridge were temporarily closed, with traffic diverted to Clawiter Road and alternate routes, including the Dumbarton Bridge, Bay Bridge, and State Route 237.
CHP officers secured the scene, documented vehicle damage, and coordinated evidence tows as part of the investigation. Authorities stated that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash. All westbound lanes were reopened by approximately 7:45 PM after roadway cleanup, evidence collection, and clearance operations were completed.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
