Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run at Hwy 99, Taft Highway On-Ramp in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – In the early hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, a pedestrian collision resulted in fatal injuries to an unidentified man who was walking along southbound Highway 99, according to KGET, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:30 AM near the State Route 119 on-ramp, also known as Taft Highway.

Authorities stated that the man was walking in the third lane of southbound Highway 99 when he was first struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene immediately after the impact. Investigators reported that the victim was left lying in the roadway following the initial collision.

CHP officials said that a short time later, a second vehicle traveling southbound, identified as a Honda, struck the man while he was still in the traffic lane. Due to the severity of the injuries sustained in the collisions, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials reported that the driver of the Honda remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement as required under standard investigative procedures. No injuries to that driver were reported.

Investigators noted that a hit-and-run investigation is underway to locate the driver of the first vehicle involved. Authorities stated that it is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in either collision.

CHP implemented traffic breaks and lane closures southbound near Hosking Avenue and the State Route 119 connector to protect emergency responders and preserve the scene. Caltrans crews assisted with traffic control and roadway safety measures while the investigation continued.

Authorities indicated that the investigation remains ongoing as CHP continues to examine vehicle movements, roadway conditions, and potential contributing factors consistent with established traffic collision investigation protocols.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
