Sutter County, CA – On the evening of Thursday, December 18, 2025, a single-vehicle collision resulted in fatal injuries to an adult driver after a vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a rice field, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:50 PM near the intersection of Butte House Road and Humphrey Road.
Authorities said the driver was traveling northbound on Humphrey Road and approached Butte House Road, which ends at a T-intersection, when the vehicle continued straight across the intersection, left the roadway, crossed a ditch, and came to rest in a nearby rice field. A witness contacted authorities after observing the vehicle go over an embankment.
CHP stated that the driver was unresponsive when officers arrived at the scene. Emergency medical personnel rendered aid and transported the driver to Rideout Hospital, where the individual was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts. Officials indicated the vehicle was not submerged and sustained damage consistent with leaving the roadway.
CHP Fatal logs reflect a coordinated emergency response that included sheriff’s deputies, medical personnel, towing services, and roadway closures while the scene was investigated. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
