Two Crashes with Injury on Hwy 166 in Santa Maria

Santa Maria, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, September 30, 2025, two separate crashes on Highway 166 left drivers injured and closed lanes of traffic, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the first collision took place around 5:56 PM on State Route 166 near mile-post-marker 32.

Authorities stated that the two-vehicle head-on crash occurred during an attempt to pass on the highway. Injuries ranged from minor to moderate, and emergency crews airlifted one person from the scene for medical treatment.

Less than three hours later, around 8:30 PM, a big rig overturned and caught fire on the same highway near Chimeneas Ranch Road.

The crash caused significant damage to a guardrail and a nearby bridge. Both lanes of traffic were shut down as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the wreckage.

By Wednesday morning, the roadway reopened with one-lane traffic control in place. Officials advised drivers to expect delays as cleanup and repairs continued.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed both incidents remain under investigation.

Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a Personal Injury Claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
