Fatal Collision with Dump Truck on Hwy 59 near Oakdale Rd in Merced County

Merced County, CA – On the morning of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a man lost his life in a head-on collision involving a dump truck, according to KSEE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash took place around 6:21 AM on Highway 59, just south of Oakdale Road.

Investigators said the man was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion southbound on Highway 59 at an undetermined speed. At the same time, a man from Merced was operating a dump truck northbound at approximately 55 miles per hour. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford appears to have crossed into the northbound lane and struck the dump truck on the driver’s side.

The driver of the Ford Fusion died at the scene from his injuries. Emergency personnel and the coroner responded shortly after the crash. The dump truck driver did not suffer any injuries.

Authorities closed the roadway for several hours to allow emergency crews and Caltrans to clear debris and investigate the cause. CHP confirmed that all lanes reopened later that morning. The crash remains under investigation.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
