Hwy 101, Laetitia Vineyard Dr Crash, near Arroyo Grande Kills 2 in SLO County

San Luis Obispo County, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, two people lost their lives in a fiery single-vehicle crash, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:47 PM on the northbound lanes of Highway 101 near Laetitia Vineyard Drive, south of Arroyo Grande.

According to authorities, initial investigations suggest that a vehicle veered off the roadway and into the bushes, where it caught fire and ignited nearby vegetation. Heavy smoke filled the area, making it difficult for emergency crews to locate the wreck. The Five Cities Fire Authority responded alongside Cal Fire and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Medics found two people inside the vehicle, both unresponsive. They were declared dead at the scene.

Firefighters worked to control the flames as a tow truck prepared to retrieve the car, which had come to rest about 40 feet down an embankment beneath a tree.

Traffic on northbound Highway 101 came to a standstill for several hours. Caltrans reported that only one lane remained open during the evening as responders cleared debris and conducted recovery operations. By 6:13 PM, officials confirmed that all lanes had reopened.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. The victims’ names have not yet been released pending notification of the family.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Wrongful Death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
