San Luis Obispo County, CA – On Monday afternoon, September 22, 2025, a single-vehicle crash near Lake Nacimiento caused the death of 62-year-old David Upham of Bradley, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The crash happened around 2:05 PM on Nacimiento Lake Drive, just west of Reservoir Road.
Investigators said Upham drove a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan eastbound on the roadway. For reasons that remain under review, his vehicle left the north edge of the road and struck a wooden fence.
The collision led to a vehicle fire that placed Upham in immediate danger. CHP officers reached the scene and pulled Upham from the burning vehicle. Medical responders began lifesaving efforts, but Upham’s injuries proved severe. Despite their attempts to save him, he died at the crash site.
No one else rode in the vehicle, and no other vehicles became involved in the incident. CHP officers noted that they did not suspect alcohol or drugs in connection with the crash. The cause of the collision remains under active investigation.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
