The Bakersfield Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:50 PM at the intersection of Hughes Lane and Holden Way.
Emergency personnel arrived to find an overturned SUV with a man pinned beneath the vehicle, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man who had been a passenger in the SUV sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the other vehicle also suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a separate hospital for medical care.
According to a preliminary investigation, the SUV had been traveling southbound on Hughes Lane and was attempting an eastbound turn onto Holden Way when it entered the path of a northbound vehicle, resulting in a broadside collision. The impact caused the SUV to overturn.
Authorities stated that speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but potential drug or alcohol involvement is being investigated pending toxicology results.
The identity of the deceased will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office after notification of next of kin. The collision remains under active investigation.
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a Personal Injury Claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
