Fatal Fiery Big Rig Crash at SR-119 / Taft Hwy, Tupman Rd near Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 13, 2025, a collision between a big rig and an SUV resulted in fatal injuries, according to KBAK, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:47 PM near the intersection of State Route 119 (Taft Highway) and Tupman Road, west of Bakersfield.

Authorities said the crash involved a black big rig and a black Ford Explorer. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway and ignited a fire that spread to nearby grass. Bystanders reportedly attempted to extinguish the flames before emergency crews arrived.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kern County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin. It is currently unknown whether there were additional occupants or injuries.

CHP issued a closure for SR-119 in both directions near the crash site as crews worked to clear the wreckage and contain the fire. Several towing companies were called to remove the vehicles, including heavy-duty wreckers for the big rig.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure played a role.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
