UPDATE: Renee Sholee Arrevaniz, 41, Named as Victim of Fatal Pedestrian Crash at Hwy 178, Union Ave in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified 41-year-old Renee Sholee Arrevaniz as the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle on the afternoon of Saturday, March 8, 2025, according to KBAK.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident occurred around 3:00 PM on eastbound Highway 178, east of Union Avenue.

Authorities said Arrevaniz was crossing northbound from the south shoulder, outside of a marked crosswalk, when a 61-year-old man driving a 2007 Ford Mustang struck her. Emergency responders arrived, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the location and cooperated with authorities. CHP stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors for the driver, though it is unclear if they were a factor for Arrevaniz.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified Arrevaniz following the crash. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. Anyone with information is urged to contact CHP.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
