Calpine, CA – On the morning of Wednesday, March 5, 2025, a driver suffered moderate injuries after being trapped for nearly 22 hours when their vehicle crashed down a hillside in Sierra County, according to KGET.
The sheriff’s office reports that the accident took place around 10 AM near Highway 89, approximately three miles north of Calpine.
A passing motorist spotted the wreckage and called 911, unsure if anyone was inside the vehicle. Emergency responders arrived and located the car about 30 feet down the hillside. Inside, they found a 36-year-old man and a dog.
Crews from multiple agencies worked for nearly an hour to free the driver before transporting him to a nearby hospital. The dog appeared unharmed and was placed in the care of a friend.
Authorities said the driver had been trapped inside the wreckage for nearly a full day before being discovered. The California Highway Patrol stated that the driver admitted to losing focus before veering off the road.
The incident remains under investigation.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
