February 1, 2025, Fresno, CA: An accident involving bicyclists that occurred after an altercation led to injuries on Saturday afternoon in Fresno.
The incident took place around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Balch Avenue. Approximately 20 bicyclists were traveling southbound on Chestnut at the time when the bicyclists were involved in a verbal altercation with the driver of a grey sedan. The driver pulled onto the side of the road and called the driver of a white Dodge SUV while the bicyclists continued onward.
Police reported that the driver of the SUV arrived on scene and purposely drove onto the sidewalk, striking two teenagers on their bicycles. He then backed up and pulled forward, slamming into a man riding his bicycle in the southbound bike lane. The driver of the SUV was assaulted by several people on scene and was injured following the collision.
The two teenage bicyclists were rushed to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The adult male on the bicycle sustained major injuries and was also hospitalized.
Police arrested the 23-year-old male driver of the SUV for his role in the incident. He was arrested on charges of suspected assault with a deadly weapon.
No further details have been released but police continue their investigation into the accident at this time.
