Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Accident on Chester Avenue in Bakersfield CA

Drivers in Bakersfield already pay little attention to pedestrians and rarely slow down enough when they see those on foot in the roadway. The lack of care becomes even worse at night when motorists seem to put even less effort into spotting pedestrians and showing them care.

In a collision with a truck or SUV, a defenseless pedestrian may suffer broken bones, a traumatic brain injury, and other internal damage. In many cases, the weight and speed of a vehicle are more than enough to threaten the lives of those traveling by foot.

Two Pedestrians Badly Hurt After Weekend Hit-And-Run Accident in Bakersfield

Two people on foot suffered serious injuries after being struck by a truck early Saturday morning in northern Bakersfield. KGET-TV reported the accident occurred on Chester Avenue just after midnight on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene just north of Decatur Street. Investigators say that a black Chevy pickup truck hit two people crossing Chester Avenue. The driver of the truck then fled the scene.

The two pedestrians were left in the roadway. Both victims were rushed to a local hospital with what were determined to be major injuries.

The California Highway Patrol says that the hit-and-run suspect was in a lifted, older model Chevy truck. It was last seen traveling westbound on Washington Street. If you have any information about the driver or the location of the truck, please contact the Bakersfield area Highway Patrol office.

Support for Victims After a Bakersfield Pedestrian Accident

After a pedestrian accident, victims may face several unfair expenses they weren’t anticipating. Enormous medical bills can appear in the mailbox. Weekly paychecks could stop coming when a patient can’t make it to work. There is also the toll of pain and emotional trauma to consider.

To help with these costs, an at-fault driver’s auto accident insurance provider should be called upon to pay for every expense victims and their families will see. Careless drivers can be held responsible for pedestrian accidents, even if victims weren’t in a crosswalk when they were struck. A hit-and-run driver may face a criminal trial, but that won’t delay civil proceedings to decide how much support a victim should receive. The two cases are separate.

If a hit-and-run driver is never located, it is still possible to earn compensation for victims. Families can file a claim using the victim’s own car accident insurance or a family member’s policy that covered the victim. This claim would utilize the policy’s uninsured motorist coverage to provide support so victims can rebuild their lives.
