Suspects can make a split-second decision to try to evade police capture, but they must realize that they put more than just themselves in jeopardy. A fleeing suspect often makes a reckless attempt to outrun investigators, putting the officers in pursuit at risk. A suspect also places every vehicle occupant along the chase route in danger of a high-speed collision and serious injury.
Police Chase Results in Crash Injuring Two Drivers
A driver fleeing a traffic stop caused a serious collision that sent two people to the hospital Sunday morning. KBFX-TV reported the accident occurred at the intersection of Truxtun Avenue and Oak Street on April 16, 2023.
Bakersfield police (BPD) confirmed that they stopped a female driver for a code violation sometime before 9:30 a.m. The suspect then took off from the officers in her vehicle and they chased the woman. The pursuit ended when the woman struck another vehicle.
Both drivers involved in the crash were injured. In pictures from the scene, one victim can be observed on a stretcher.
BPD said that the female suspect who led the chase would face charges of evading arrest. Their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the chase and crash continues.
Finding Financial Assistance for Victims After a Bakersfield Car Accident
Innocent victims injured in a police chase can wonder if anyone can be held accountable for the medical bills and physical pain that follows. In an accident caused by a criminal suspect, victims can seek compensation for their hardships through an injury claim filed against the at-fault driver’s auto insurance coverage.
This civil claim would be seeking full compensation for every medical bill the victim receives. The physical and emotional trauma victims are exposed to should also factor into a car accident injury settlement check.
In the case of an accident involving a chase suspect, a Bakersfield car accident lawyer can help victims earn injury support even if a suspect has yet to go to trial. The victim’s civil case will be settled separately from the criminal trial. A skilled lawyer can also help the victims of an accident caused by an uninsured driver seek support.
