Accident Dangers After Traffic Stops on Shields Avenue in Fresno CA

Drivers in Fresno can be reckless in a lot of different ways. They can put other motorists at risk by speeding, running red lights, or by looking at a cell phone instead of paying attention to traffic. Drivers can also break the law by evading a police traffic stop to suddenly place innocent motorists in jeopardy.

After a crash caused by a dangerous driver, victims can suffer serious injuries and be placed at risk of losing their lives.

Driver Speeding Away from Traffic Stop Causes Deadly Crash

A man was killed after being struck by a speeding driver in central Fresno late Wednesday night. KFSN-TV reports the crash took place at the intersection of Fresno Street and Shields Avenue on February 8, 2023.

Fresno police say the tragic incident began at around 11 p.m. when they stopped a white SUV for a non-moving traffic violation. After a moment, the SUV’s driver sped away from the police down Shields. Police officers say they pursued the driver for a short time but quickly called off the chase.

Investigators say the suspect continued to exceed the speed limit down Shields Avenue and then rammed a Chevy Cruz car after running a red light at the Fresno Street intersection.

The 29-year-old Fresno man driving the Chevy was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center but tragically died a short time later. The 40-year-old man who police say ran from them also was injured and is now listed in critical condition.

Officers say the 40-year-old suspect is on parole and has a warrant out for his arrest for domestic violence charges. He now faces several felony charges including evasion causing death, DUI causing death, and vehicular manslaughter.

Finding Support for Families After Tragic Fresno Car Collisions

Families who have had a loved one taken from them should be left alone and given the time to grieve. Unfortunately, they can receive funeral bills and medical bills in just a few weeks after an accident.

Families can seek support for these and other hardships by filing a wrongful death claim against an at-fault driver. The claim would also request assistance for the future when the deceased can no longer support close relatives with guidance and weekly income.

Support can be secured for a spouse or children of the victim, even if a guilty driver doesn’t have car insurance. The family could still file a wrongful death claim against the victim’s own car insurance coverage. The money would come from the policy’s uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

An at-fault driver may be facing criminal charges after a crash, but that doesn’t mean families must wait on a trial to seek financial help. They can file a civil wrongful death claim, even if a criminal trial hasn’t started. The two cases are resolved separately.
