Hit-And-Run Wrong-Way Accident Dangers on I-280 in San Francisco

A wrong-way driver on a fast-moving San Francisco interstate poses a frightening safety risk to all traffic in the area. Even cautious drivers can be confused when seeing headlights coming at them on a freeway. Motorists may not have the time or awareness to steer clear of a devastating accident.

Wrong-way violations often end in head-on collisions. These tragic incidents become even more devastating when the responsible driver decides to run away from the scene of the accident. A hit-and-run driver can leave victims waiting longer for medical care. The suspect also puts the family of the victim at risk of having to cover the enormous costs that arise in the aftermath of an accident alone.

Hit-And-Run Wrong-Way Accident Claims One Life on I-280

A wrong-way accident tragically claimed one life early Friday morning near San Francisco’s Cayuga Terrace Neighborhood. CBS Bay Area reported the accident occurred on Interstate 280 near the Geneva Avenue exit on January 6, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene just before 2 a.m. Investigators believe the driver of a Honda Civic was proceeding the wrong way in the southbound lanes when it struck a Black Lexus SUV head-on. The Lexus ended up in the northbound lanes and the Honda was left in the southbound lanes. Lanes in both directions had to be shut down in order to assist victims.

Emergency responders say a passenger in the Lexus suffered major injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver of the Lexus received only minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda fled the scene and according to the last update, remained on the run. The California Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Finding Help for Families After a San Francisco Interstate Accident

Families will never completely recover from the grief and emotional pain of losing a loved one. That loved one can never be replaced, but families should be allowed to seek justice for what’s happened and protect themselves financially.

A wrongful death claim filed against an at-fault driver’s car insurance company asks for help with funeral costs and emergency response fees. It also seeks to stabilize a family financially by asking for support for the future when the deceased’s weekly paychecks will no longer be available.

When a hit-and-run suspect escapes capture, families can still seek wrongful death support. They are able to file a claim with the victim’s own car insurance company. This wrongful death claim asks for support from the victim’s own uninsured motorist coverage.

If there’s good news, and a hit-and-run suspect is found and arrested, the driver’s car insurance company could face the wrongful death claim, even as the suspect goes through a separate, criminal trial.
