Drivers across Fresno County can exercise all due caution when traveling local roads, but they will always be vulnerable to careless drivers who don’t show the same caution. A careless driver attempting a left turn is a common traffic situation that can lead to risk for other motorists.
Turns require the full attention of every driver. They must monitor traffic from several directions including oncoming vehicles. When drivers are distracted or don’t take the time to fully check the lanes around them, their turn can put them in the path of other travelers and cause devastating collisions.
Fresno County is the scene of hundreds of accidents caused by turning violations each year. California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) tracks these incidents. In 2020, they documented 535 accidents involving a driver attempting an improper turn in Fresno County. Those collisions resulted in 688 injuries and tragically cost 21 victims their lives.
Woman Badly Injured After SUV Overturns in Fresno County
A tragic traffic accident southeast of Fresno Tuesday afternoon left a woman with severe injuries. The Fresno Bee reports the crash occurred around 2 p.m. along Chestnut Avenue at the intersection of East Muscat Avenue on May 11, 2021.
The California Highway Patrol found that the driver of a Kia traveling north on Chestnut attempted a left turn and pulled in front of a woman driving a GMC Envoy southbound. The GMC’s driver swerved to avoid a collision, ran off the road, and collided with a chain-link fence. The GMC overturned.
The woman driving the GMC was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. Two children inside the GMC were restrained and thankfully were not hurt.
The driver of the KIA stayed on the scene to cooperate with the CHP. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
Finding Help for Fresno County Accident Victims
Victims of frightening accidents should be able to focus on getting better and not be forced to stress over the costs of recovery. To prevent California injury victims from experiencing unfair hardships over an accident that wasn’t their fault, they are permitted to file a claim for damages against an at-fault driver’s insurance provider.
This civil claim, filed by the victim or his or her family, will ask the insurance company for assistance with hospital bills that are due now and any bills expected in the future. A claim can also list and ask for help in making up lost paychecks while the victim has had to be out of work.
Insurance companies should offer support for every difficulty victims and their families face after a devastating crash. However, insurance agents can often focus on keeping costs down by offering as little as possible to victims. These settlement offers may only cover one night spent in an emergency department of a hospital. Or course, any recovery from a serious injury can require many more days of medical care and expensive physical therapy for a full recovery.
