Pedestrians in Tulare can sometimes feel trapped by poor road design and a lack of sidewalks. There can be very few ways to safely travel the city on foot when crosswalks and pedestrian bridges can be miles apart.
The emergency crews that respond to accidents around the city see the dangers that pedestrians face far too often. Tulare County reported 100 collisions involving pedestrians over 2019. 15 of those accidents resulted in a tragic death. Another 98 people were hurt by those crashes.
The accident statistics can be counted up at the end of each year, but the terrible toll those accidents take on local families and communities can never be added up.
Pedestrian Killed on Highway 99 in Tulare
A man trying to cross Highway 99 was killed after suffering multiple collisions in northern Tulare Thursday night. ABC30-TV reports the tragic accident happened after 8 p.m. along Highway 99 at Prosperity Avenue on February 4, 2021.
The California Highway Patrol says the victim was attempting to run across the highway. A tractor-trailer driver managed to avoid him but a driver in a Toyota Prius didn’t avoid the man. A Honda Civic also hit the victim. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Both drivers involved stayed on the scene. The investigation into the accident continues.
Help for Families After Tulare Pedestrian Accidents
The terrible news that a loved one has been lost will be something a family can never fully recover from. The emotional pain will last a lifetime.
A sudden death can also saddle a family with ambulance fees and funeral expenses as well as the costs of settling someone’s estate. This doesn’t even take into account the loss of emotional support family members won’t ever be able to draw from again.
Nothing can ever make up for the loss of a close relative, but families are allowed to try to stabilize their immediate financial situation and avoid financial hardships in the future. This can be done by filing a wrongful death claim on behalf of the family. This claim can help a family protect itself in the years to come and help them find some closure after a tragedy.
Compensation can be earned even if a victim was partially at fault for his or her accident. Drivers are required to show pedestrians a “duty of care” no matter where they encounter them. This legal concept is in place because people on foot travel at a much greater risk to their lives when compared to someone in a vehicle. So a pedestrian can be somewhere other than a crosswalk when they are hit, but an at-fault driver can still be held liable for the consequences of an accident.
