People on foot should be the safest of anyone traveling along streets and byways in Fresno County. Unfortunately, pedestrians all too often become the victims of careless drivers who don’t pay enough attention to what’s in front of them.
The situation is especially alarming in California, where we consistently rank as the most dangerous state in the nation for anyone on foot. California reported 893 pedestrian deaths in 2018, making up one-fourth of all traffic fatalities in the state.
Distracted drivers can be paying attention to a phone, a radio, or even a sunset and miss a defenseless pedestrian crossing right in front of them.
Pedestrian Hit and Killed in Friant
A pedestrian trying to cross a Fresno County road was hit and killed Friday evening. ABC30-TV reported the accident happened on North Friant Road and East Belcher Street in Friant around 7:25 p.m. on October 16, 2020.
The Highway Patrol says the victim was a woman. She was trying to cross near the intersection when she was struck by the vehicle. The woman died at the scene.
Investigators say the driver stayed on the scene and called for help.
Financial Support for the Families of Pedestrian Accident Victims
After a tragedy, a family deserves time and space to mourn the loss of loved ones. The relatives left behind may also have to soon face the costs associated with the aftermath of a collision. They may have to take action to make sure they aren’t left to face the expenses stemming from the accident themselves.
At this time, a claim for compensation won’t bring back a loved one, but it can cover costs created by the driver’s mistake and provide financial stability for the family in the decades to come.
A wrongful death civil lawsuit may be filed against the at-fault driver’s insurance company. This claim can be filed on behalf of the family by a close relative like a spouse or domestic partner. Children of the victim may also file the claim. Even the parents of the victim may file if they were dependent on the son or daughter. An attorney working for the family can also bring the claim forward.
If successful through a settlement or a court verdict, a claim can compensate a family for many of their hardships. Things like ambulance fees and funeral costs can be fully reimbursed. The annual salary the victim can no longer provide the family can be compensated. Emotional trauma can be considered in an award. Even the love and emotional support the victim would have provided his spouse and children down the road can be compensated as part of a settlement.
