Central Valley roads see heavy traffic and travel can be harrowing even when everyone is following the rules of the road. But when drivers decide to operate vehicles in a reckless manner every motorist around them is at risk.
Speeding reduces the time and distance a driver has to react to obstacles ahead. The extreme velocity also magnifies the consequences of any collision. Injuries and damage can be severe. The decision to speed can also lead to the loss of life.
Merced Deadly Speeding Accident Into House
A deadly rollover crash claimed the life of a motorist in Merced on Tuesday morning. ABC30-TV reported the accident happened just before 5 am near Dunn Road and Crescendo Avenue on August 18, 2020.
Merced police say the driver was speeding when his car left the road, slammed into several trees and landed on the wall of a house. The car came to rest upside down.
Investigators say the driver died at the scene. The cause of the accident hasn’t been released.
Speeding Dangers Across California
The traffic data for California has never been very positive, but somehow the cases of speeding and deadly accidents have been on the rise in 2020. With fewer people on the freeways, more people have decided to step on the gas pedal.
ABC7-TV reported on the numbers from the first three months of the year. California is among several states to see a notable increase in the number of roadway deaths. The state has seen an 8% increase in the number of fatalities. Perhaps pointing to a deadly connection, in roughly the same period the California Highway Patrol has issued 87% more speeding tickets to drivers going more than 100mph.
State officials have even resorted to warning pedestrians and bicyclists of the increased dangers from reckless drivers during the pandemic.
At the very least a speeding driver risks a traffic ticket, a fine, and increased insurance premiums. In the worst cases, they can face criminal charges and be responsible for their own death or the death of another driver. It pays to let off the gas and let everyone get home safely.
