A head-on-collision is one of the deadliest accident types there is. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, head-on collisions make up about 2 percent of all crashes in the U.S. but account for 10 percent of all fatalities.
When a driver is drunk or high, and they get behind the wheel, then accidents like head-on collisions become even more likely.
Three Injured in Fresno County DUI Head-On Crash
Police arrested a Fresno driver on suspicion of DUI after an accident that sent two others and the driver to a local hospital. The accident happened Sunday evening, March 1, 2020, when a car drifted from the eastbound California Ave lane into the westbound lane near Cornelia Ave. The car hit another vehicle coming westbound head-on.
Two people from the westbound car were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Police are still investigating the accident, and more charges might be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.
DUI Head-On Injuries
One of the problems with a head-on collision is that it happens quickly because both cars are speeding toward each other. This makes it difficult for the driver to take defensive measures, sometimes not even being able to let off on the accelerator.
When the driver drifting in the other lane is impaired, their impairment lowers their reaction time and their judgment and makes a crash even more dangerous. Because of the force of the impact of a head-on collision, there are common injuries seen by EMS and trauma room workers involved in these accidents. Some of the most common are:
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Blunt Force Trauma
- Broken arms/legs
- Fractured Collarbone
- Displaced Ribs
- Nerve Damage’
- Spine Injuries
- Organ Damages
