What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs as a result of a direct blow or sudden jolt to the head. The vast majority of people who sustain concussions make quick recoveries, but others continue to experience symptoms for weeks or even months following after the injury. This is known as post-concussion syndrome or PCS.

What Causes PCS?

PCS only affects a small percentage of people who have sustained mild head injuries. However, experts are not certain why some victims develop PCS and others don’t. Some experts believe that PCS only develops after injuries that cause structural damage to the brain. But others believe that victims with a history of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders are at a greater risk of developing PCS. Most experts agree that a history of prior concussions puts victims at a much greater risk of experiencing PCS.

Your gender can play a role as well. Studies have shown that women are more likely to be diagnosed with PCS than men, but experts are not sure why.

What Are the Signs of PCS?

Victims with PCS will experience concussion symptoms for weeks or months after the injury. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lethargy
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Blurry vision
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability

There are no tests that can be used to diagnose PCS. Doctors typically diagnose PCS based on the patient’s symptoms and history of head trauma. Doctors may conduct imaging tests to rule out more severe brain injuries such as bleeding or structural damage.

How is PCS Treated?

There is no way to treat PCS itself, however, doctors can treat the symptoms of PCS in order to make you more comfortable. For example, many people with PCS experience severe headaches that interfere with their day-to-day life. These patients may be prescribed medications that are used to treat migraines.  Anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications may also be prescribed in cases where the victim is experiencing depression or anxiety caused by PCS.

If you are suffering from PCS, it’s important to get plenty of rest. Physical and mental rest may speed up recovery by giving your brain time to naturally heal after a concussion.
