Multi-Car Collision Involving Church Van Injures Six in Fresno

Three cars collided on a central Fresno road sending five people to the hospital. The accident happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2019, when a Lexus heading west on W. McKinley Ave near N. Brawley Ave struck a church van and then careened into the oncoming lane striking a Honda head-on.

The California Highway Patrol says that the van had 13 passengers but only one sustained injuries and was released at the scene. Three people in the Honda and two inside the Lexus all sustained serious injuries and were taken to local hospitals.

Multi-Car Vehicles and Head-On Collisions

The head-on collision is by far the most dangerous accident to be in. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, head-on collisions account for only two percent of all accidents yet make up over 10 percent of all fatalities.

What makes them so dangerous is the impact is comprised of the weight and momentum of both vehicles, and passengers are often thrown violently inside the vehicle or ejected.

A head-on happens when one car crosses the center line of a road into oncoming traffic. Sometimes this happens when a car hits rear-ends or glances off another car going in the same direction and then is pushed over the center line.

Types of Injuries in a Multi-Car Head-On Collision

When more than two cars are involved in an accident, the risk of a serious injury increases especially when a primary impact leads to a second and more serious impact like a head-on collision. The injuries in these accidents can be devastating to those involved.

Some of the more common injuries in a head-on collision are:

  • Blunt Force Trauma
  • Head Injuries/Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Broken Bones
  • Chest Compressions
  • Organ Damage
  • Internal Injuries/Bleeding
  • Air bag injuries
