Most Common Types of Motorcycle Accidents—And How to Avoid Them

There’s no doubt that riding a motorcycle is dangerous. In fact, over 5,000 people are killed in motorcycle accidents every year and thousands more suffer non-fatal injuries. Besides wearing safety gear, the best way to protect yourself is by learning how accidents occur so you know how to avoid them.  Here are the most common types of motorcycle accidents:

Left-Turn Accidents

Left-turn accidents account for about 42% of all accidents involving a motorcycle and vehicle. This type of accident occurs when a car turns left in front of a motorcyclist who is going straight through an intersection or attempting to pass the vehicle. Before turning left, the driver may not see the motorcyclist or may misjudge the distance between the vehicle and the motorcycle.

Do not lay your bike down in order to avoid this type of accident. Instead, pay attention to your surroundings so you can identify cars that could potentially make left turns in front of you. Don’t ever assume that other drivers can see you even if there is nothing obstructing their view.

Lane-Changing Accidents

A collision can also occur when a vehicle moves into a lane that a motorcyclist is currently occupying. Blind spots are usually to blame for lane-changing accidents. To avoid this type of accident, make sure that you never spend too much time in a driver’s blind spot. Larger vehicles typically have larger blind spots, so give yourself plenty of room if you’re riding near an SUV, truck, or semi.

Rear-End Accidents

A rear-end accident involving two cars is often referred to as a fender bender, but rear-end motorcycle accidents are serious crashes that can lead to fatal injuries.  Rear-end motorcycle accidents usually occur at red lights or stop signs or in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

To avoid a rear-end crash, stay to the side of the lane once you come to a complete stop. If a car is about to hit you from behind, it’s much easier to make a quick getaway if you are off to the side instead of in the center of the lane.

Flash your brake light multiple times once you’ve come to a complete stop so drivers know you’re there. Don’t let your guard down simply because you’re at a red light or stop sign—be prepared to ride away if you see that a car is about to crash into you.
