Clavicle Fractures: What Victims Should Expect

The clavicle, also known as the collarbone, is located between the shoulder and ribcage. Clavicle fractures are quite common. In fact, the clavicle is one of the most fractured bones on the whole body. But this does not mean that this injury should be taken lightly. Here’s what you should expect if you have fractured your collarbone:

Pain and Discomfort

A clavicle fracture can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. Some people experience constant pain after fracturing this bone, whereas others only report pain when they attempt to move their arm. The area around the fracture may also swell and bruise, which can add to your discomfort. Many people with fractured clavicles find that the pain makes it hard to lay down to sleep for the first few nights.   Fortunately, the pain and discomfort will die down once the injury starts to heal. In the meantime, most doctors recommend taking over-the-counter pain medications and applying ice to the affected area.

Treatment

Most fractured clavicles heal without surgical treatment. Your doctor will most likely recommend immobilizing the fractured bone with an arm sling. The time that it takes to fully heal while wearing a sling will vary depending on a number of factors, including your age. Adults should expect to wear a sling for about 10 to 12 weeks.

Most clavicle fractures will not require surgery, but surgical treatment is necessary in some cases. For example, surgery is usually required when the ends of the collarbone have shifted too far out of place.

Frozen Shoulder Complication

A fractured clavicle can lead to several complications, including a frozen shoulder, which is characterized by stiffness, pain, and a limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. A frozen shoulder can develop as a result of keeping the shoulder joint immobile in an arm sling.

To prevent this complication, it’s important to keep your shoulder moving while your fractured clavicle heals. You may be hesitant to move your shoulder while wearing an arm sling, but there’s nothing to worry about. Shoulder movement will not prevent your fracture from healing. However, you shouldn’t start moving your shoulder without talking to your doctor first.
