Tractor Injuries: Even the Most Experienced Operators Have Them

Farmers regularly use many different types of heavy machinery, including tractors. These powerful machines are dangerous. In fact, tractor use is the leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the agricultural industry. If you work on a farm, it’s important to understand how these tractor injuries occur so you can protect yourself.

Rollovers

A rollover accident can lead to serious, sometimes fatal injuries. Newer tractor models are designed with a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS), which protects operators in the event their tractor rolls over. It’s estimated that agricultural fatalities would decrease by about 71% if every farmer in the U.S. used a tractor with this safety feature. But unfortunately, many farmers still use older models that lack a ROPS.

If you want to stay safe, make sure the tractor you are using is designed with this feature. The ROPS system is even more effective if the operator is wearing a seatbelt at the time of the rollover, so be sure you always buckle up before starting your tractor.

Runovers

This type of accident occurs when the tractor runs over the operator or another person who is present on the farm. To avoid a runover accident, never get off of a tractor until it has been turned off. Wear your seatbelt at all times so you are not thrown from the tractor and run over.

Don’t allow anyone else to ride the tractor with you, either. Most tractors are only designed to seat one person, so an extra rider could easily fall off of the tractor and get run over.

Accidents on the Road

Farmers are often injured in tractor accidents that occur on the road. Tractors do not provide much protection, so operators who are hit by a vehicle on the road can sustain serious injuries. Stay safe on the road by being mindful of your surroundings at all times. If a driver approaches you from the rear, allow him to pass you if it is safe to do so.

Use hand signals to communicate with other drivers on the road so they know what you are doing.

Try to avoid driving at night, but if you have to, make sure you turn on your lights so other drivers can see you. Following these tips can keep you safe on the road.
