Deadliest Highways in Tracy

Tracy is a crossroads for all types of traffic.

There are motorists just trying to get to work or school on time. There are truck drivers hauling heavy loads for local farms or area manufacturers. There are motorcyclists heading towards the Bay Area for a scenic ride.

Traffic is usually heavy on highways in and around Tracy, but it’s not always smooth. Reckless and distracted drivers can make the journey dangerous, and every year, motorists lose their lives on busy routes in the area.

Maison Law’s car accident lawyers in Tracy commissioned a study to explore the latest data on fatal accidents in the area. It’s hoped that a visual representation of the deadly hazards on local roads will encourage drivers to keep their eyes on the road and go lighter on the gas pedal.

The Highway with the Most Traffic Fatalities in Tracy

The deadliest highway in Tracy is an interstate, but which one can depend on your definition of “in Tracy.”

Freeway 5 doesn’t pass through city limits, but plenty of Tracy residents use I-5 to head into Manteca or Stockton. It’s the highway that gets the most traffic in San Joaquin County, and it usually sees the most accidents (even more than 99).

But I-205 and I-580 pass directly through Tracy, and may count as more local highways for many motorists. If that’s the case, I-580 has seen more deadly accidents in recent years. I-580 actually sees far fewer serious accidents a year than I-205, but still averages slightly more deadly outcomes.

  • I-580 – Through Tracy and San Joaquin County, this interstate has averaged 3 deaths a year over the past 5-year span (2021-2025). It was the scene of 2 fatalities in 2025 and 7 deaths in 2024. That’s according to California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS).
  • I-205 – Through Tracy and San Joaquin County, this interstate has averaged 2.8 deaths a year over the past 5-years (2021 to 2025). I-205 recorded one death in 2025 and 3 deaths in 2024.
  • I-5 – Through San Joaquin County, I-5 was responsible for an average of 12 deaths a year over five years (2021 to 2025). I-5 documented 5 fatalities in 2025 and 13 in 2024.

  • I-205 – Interstate 205 has averaged 148 accidents involving injury annually (2021-2025).
