A frightening accident on a California boulevard can sometimes go further than a broken taillight or some minor bumps and bruises.
The victims inside a wrecked vehicle can be exposed to powerful forces and subject to violent impacts.
Their injuries might be severe, and the care provided at a normal ER might not be enough to save their lives. Fortunately, California has some of the best hospitals available in the country, and many have Trauma Centers staffed and equipped to provide victims with the best care available anywhere.
Knowing where the closest trauma center is in relation to your home may help reassure you after an accident. This information could also help you track down where a loved one has been taken after a scary crash.
Finding the Closest Trauma Centers in California
The biggest cities in California will have the biggest hospitals and the best access to life-saving care at Trauma Centers. But there are hospitals up and down the state that house the only Trauma Centers for hundreds of miles.
Both types of facilities are critical in giving everyone in California a better chance to survive a bad traffic pile-up or any other type of personal injury accident.
Los Angeles Trauma Centers
Los Angeles is home to some of the best hospitals in the state, including some associated with top medical schools. In fact, there are 15 trauma centers in the area. Patients in local accidents across Los Angeles County can end up at one of these facilities. Victims can also be flown in from all across Southern California for care. The Treatment Trauma Centers Offer
Trauma Centers are designed with the survival of badly injured patients in mind. Victims with traumatic injuries are rushed to trauma centers in ambulances and at times, by helicopter. These injuries can involve victims who have been exposed to blunt force trauma, perhaps in a head-on collision or a fall from a considerable height.
They may have suffered a penetrating trauma, such as the kind a gunshot or stabbing incident would cause. The victims of severe burns are also sometimes treated in trauma centers.
California trauma centers offer constant access to highly trained doctors and staff and the best medical technologies currently available. They’ll be home to the most skilled nurses and radiologists. Specialized surgeons will be ready to respond at all hours. This includes neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and cardiac surgeons.
Certification for California Trauma Centers
Trauma centers are usually part of a hospital’s emergency department. Administrators must submit to qualifying inspections over the years to keep their designation. There can be adult and children’s (pediatric) trauma centers, and they can be certified as Level I, II, III, or IV.
The best Trauma Centers (Level I) are often affiliated with the medical programs at local universities. They generally have the best doctors and equipment to help severely injured victims.
California is home to 81 designated Trauma Centers. Trauma certification is usually assigned by a Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA). Some hospitals are designated Trauma Centers by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
