An automobile accident is the number one cause of serious bodily injury in the Central Valley. In some cases, the accident itself causes an amputation, and just about any significant injury to one’s arms, legs or hands can turn into a surgical amputation.
When this happens, the victim is facing some significant changes in their life. The trauma of the accident can take a long time to process, and then facing life without a limb will mean even more emotional trauma. The victim will also undergo changes in the way they accomplish everyday physical functions that they used to take for granted.
Facing Life With Amputation Injury
After the initial shock of the accident and subsequent surgeries, the victim of an amputation injury will face a long road to recovery. Some of the phases of recovery that the victim will face are:
- Post-Operative Recovery: The surgery can be an attempt to save the person’s extremity or to surgical amputate the injured body part. After surgery, the body must heal itself so that pain levels will come down and the person can begin the rehabilitation process.
- Rehabilitation: In many cases, the muscles left near the wound, and the supporting muscles need to be strengthened and circulation to the wound region needs to be increased so that the next step will succeed.
- Fitted with Artificial Device: The surgeon will begin the process by shaping the end of the bone and muscle to more readily accept a device, and then around two to three weeks after surgery, the patient will begin working with their device.
- A lifetime of Adjustment and Coping: It sometimes takes months or even a year to get fully acclimated to the device, and the emotional adjustment and wounds can take much longer to heal.
