California Trauma Center Designation Guidelines
In California, trauma center designations are assigned to both adult and pediatric trauma care facilities. Some hospitals function as both. California uses a level system to designate the type of trauma care available at each center. These are defined by the California Emergency Medical Services (EMSA).
- Level I and level II trauma centers have similar medical professionals and resources with the greatest difference being that level I hospitals serve as research and teaching facilities. Level I hospitals also take the lead in prevention and public outreach on vital health topics. Level I trauma centers may also have plastic surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons on staff.
- Level III and level IV trauma centers generally provide stabilization of trauma patients. While we have no level III or IV trauma centers in LA, we do have them in other areas of California. These hospitals may not have the surgical capabilities of level I or II trauma centers.
- Pediatric trauma centers usually focus on pediatric trauma patients.
