What Is a Trauma Center?
Trauma Centers are usually a part of a hospital’s emergency department. They provide specialized surgeons and nurses to help victims with the most severe injuries. The facilities will also have the most sophisticated medical equipment to give those with traumatic injuries the best chance at recovery
Traumatic injuries are generally the result of powerful impact forces, penetrating or blunt, that leave victims in need of immediate medical attention. These are severe, often life-threatening injuries caused by things like gunshots, falls, car accidents, and other serious incidents. Burn victims are also sometimes treated at trauma centers.
In California, these trauma centers are certified by either a Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA) or the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Trauma Centers receive a designation of Levels I through IV. A Level I trauma center would have the most advanced staff and tools available to help patients. There are also Pediatric Trauma Centers.
