Elk Grove, CA — On the afternoon of Thursday, November 5, 2026, one person lost their life after a big rig collided with two parked cars, according to FOX40.
The fatality was confirmed by the California Highway Patrol at 1:30 PM, on Highway 99 near Dillard Road, in a rural area south of Elk Grove, near the Cosumnes River Ecological Reserve.
According to investigators, the big rig was traveling northbound in the far right lane of Highway 99 when, for unknown reasons, it drifted from its lane and struck two cars on the shoulder of the roadway near the Dillard Road intersection.
One of the cars was reportedly a Mazda that had pulled over after breaking down on 99, and the other belonged to a family member who had come to help and was parked behind the Mazda.
The impact caused the big rig to overturn and block one of the traffic lanes as well as the center divide, leading to a traffic jam that lasted approximately three hours. Some of those involved in the traffic jam reportedly abandoned their vehicles and continued on foot along the highway.
Emergency responders transported both the Mazda driver and their relative to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the lifesaving efforts of medical personnel, the relative of the Mazda driver succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead.
Further details regarding this fatal collision have not yet been released, including the identities of those involved and whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role.
