Vacaville, CA — According to FOX40, Gregory Tobias, 29, has been identified as the driver who lost his life on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in the multi-vehicle collision in which his wife, Vanessa Tobias, 29, was also injured.
Family members have opened a GoFundMe to raise money to lay Gregory to rest, pay for Vanessa’s medical care, and support the care of their son, Austin.
The California Highway Patrol responded to reports of the accident on Interstate 80 Eastbound, west of Lagoon Valley Road, near Lagoon Valley Regional Park and Pena Adobe Park, around 2:35 AM.
Emergency responders arriving at the crash site found a blue Hyundai Tucson, which had been struck by three vehicles after overturning for reasons that have not yet been determined.
Gregory, the 29-year-old driver of the Tucson, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger, his 29-year-old wife, Vanessa, received transportation to Kaiser Vacaville for treatment of critical injuries.
Investigators determined that the Tucson had been struck by a blue BMW coupe, a gray Buick SUV, and a white Kia sedan.
Note: On Saturday, October 31, FOX40 reported that the Kia driver was also transported to a hospital. She was described as a 60-year-old woman who had reportedly sustained major injuries. However, the most recent reporting said there were no others injured.
The influence of alcohol or drug use is not currently suspected to have played a role in the collision, and no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
Multi-Vehicle Car Accidents in California: Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims
Because California law operates on the legal principle of comparative negligence, responsibility for accidents that cause injury can be shared among multiple parties. Liability is therefore not an all-or-nothing proposition.
Investigators will examine physical evidence related to the crash and take witness statements to determine how much responsibility each party involved in this multi-vehicle accident bears, depending on their level of negligence.
The Tobias family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim on Gregory’s behalf, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship he provided.
Vanessa Tobias and any other injured parties might have grounds for personal injury claims. A personal injury claim can help recover economic damages, such as medical expenses and lost wages, as well as non-economic damages, like pain and suffering.
If any of the parties harmed in this accident is found partially negligent in their own injuries, any settlement may be reduced.
